Imagining a more sustainable vision of the future
The Furzedown Low Carbon Zone is a community initiative working to reduce its dependence on fossil fuel energy, while developing local understanding of issues around sustainability and the environment.
Low Carbon Zone aims to create a support network for sustainable living; building community resilience, developing environmental awareness, and reducing dependence on diminishing fossil fuels.
The project has five key elements that aim to positively affect the community as a whole –
- Renewable Energies
- Energy Efficiency
- Sustainable Schools Initiative
- Skilling Up
- Information Network.

By sharing information, experiences and resources, community residents, businesses, schools and colleges can better support each other’s sustainable development, energy decent and an increased understanding of the natural world.
The Low Carbon Zone project has five key elements that aim to positively affect the community as a whole:

Solar buying club for residents; school solar panels; potential to invest in community owned energy - Energy Efficiency
1600 houses visited in Furzedown and Graveney by government’s RE:NEW project; Funding available for insulation; Carbon Conversation sessions running locally - Sustainable Schools Initiative
Facilitating Education for Sustainable Development within local schools; focusing on their communication, campus, community and curriculum - Skilling-Up for a greener future
Information and training for potential jobs in sustainability; links to South Thames College and Greener Jobs Alliance; sustainability and art - Information Network
Regular updates on our Project Dirt site; links to other sustainability projects, events, training and funding opportunities; discussions online and at regular FLCZ meetings
